The Strumica Carnival

TOUR CODE  E 2005003

Duration: 12 hours
Participants: 15-40

Term: 15th of March
Location: Strumica

PROGRAM

The Strumica Carnival is first mentioned in 1670. This Carnival is held every year at the beginning of the Great Lent, an Eastern Orthodox Lenten period similar to the Roman church’s calendar about one month earlier. The three days which are called the “trimer days” always begin on the Sunday night at Procka (Forgiveness Sunday) and last until the following Wednesday.

On Tuesday night, the Carnival takes place- masked groups of people stroll throughout the city, with men visiting homes of their fiancees and staying there until the early morning hours. The celebration continues with love songs and lyrics complemented with traditional musical instruments. Nowadays, the Carnival resembles similar Mardi Gras carnivals throughout the world and has a competitive character. Participants create their own masks. Each participant and group decides upon a theme and idea.  Masks should be up to 3.5 m high and the vehicles up to 12 m long.

This large event encompasses hundreds of masked people on the streets of the city as well as thousands from other cities in Macedonia and from abroad. The sponsor of this event is the mayor of Strumica. Since 1994, Strumica is a member of the International Association of Carnival Cities, FECC.

Did you know ...
The “Trimeri” custom lost its original purpose and significance, however remains as a custom in Strumica. The “trimeri” ceremony, also called the “feast of the engaged” takes place in the house of the bride, on a Wednesday, and is observed only by women who visit the house of the bride-to-be. The guests that are invited by the mother in law go together as a group, i.e. they gather at the house of the mother in law and then continue together at the house of the bride, for lunch. Each of the guests presents the bride with a gift. The group can comprise from 50, to 150 or 200 women, since only the mother in law used to invite guests to the wedding. The lunch takes place at about 12 a.m. and for that purpose, only nonfat menu is prepared, such as non-fat sarma (nuts rolled in cabbage), white beans mash, boiled corn with nuts, and as a dessert, zerde (boiled rice with sugar), white halvah, fruits, Turkish delight (lokum) and compote or rice with black plums and raisins. Instead of bread, a curek is served (a loaf made of chicory) made by the bride. Only boza is served for drinking (cold drink made from fermented grain with a slightly acidic sweet flavor) usually kept in jars. The lunch is accompanied by a festive mood and celebration. Since it is all women party, the women indulge in indecent talk and behavior and sing erotic songs.
