Delcevo

Just a few kilometers from the border with Bulgaria, in central-eastern Macedonia, lies the spirited town of Delcevo. According to legend, this town of 20,000 on the River Bregalnica was called Carevo Selo (Imperial Village) during Byzantine times.

 First mentioned in a charter of Serbian King Stefan Dusan in the 14th century, Delcevo today boasts all the features of a modern town, with a colorful downtown filled in the summer with carnival rides, cafes and music.

Delcevo’s historic namesake is remembered in an event held every August, when the Gocevi denovi (days dedicated to the revolutionary leader Goce Delcev) are held. The celebrations begin on the 2nd of August – the day on which the fateful Ilinden uprising for Macedonian liberation began in 1903.
